THE STORY OF SURVIVAL ON THE GREAT PLAINS OF MASAI MARA EAST AFRICA #kenya #masaimara #wildlife
This video includes short scenes of lions and cheetahs hunting in their natural habitat.
The story of survival on the great plains of East Africa. After six day's wildlife filming on Kenya's famous Masai Mara National Reserve I found that through my lens I had captured the story of survival. The so-called cradle of mankind is Africa, remains of our early ancestors discovered amongst their stone tools and simple art. It is remarkable to think that early humankind shared these vast grasslands, rivers and forests with spectacular concentrations of animals, foraging and hunting alongside predatory big cats and vast herds of grazing antelope.The struggle to survive is written across this landscape of life and death, reminders that our early ancestors lived and died here, steadily spreading across the globe. Today these grasslands are precious survivors from earlier ages, some of the biggest concentrations of wildlife to be seen anywhere in the world.

    I’m halfway through buliding my shave horse. I began on your beginners bow project and had the same problem, couldn’t keep it still to save my life. This video is brilliant, along with all your bow related content. I’ve always wanted to try making bows and your greenwood project on my feed inspired me to try. I’ve also been heavilt depressed recently, going out looking for greenwood and building the horse has lifted my mood exponentially. Thanks for taking the time to post all of these lessons Mick. Hi Chris. I’m sorry to read you’ve been a bit down of late. Surprising isn’t it how absorbing is working in and with wood, a way of taking oneself out of daily cares and becoming friends with bits of stick. These old crafts and aids towards accomplishing them are seriously good for our wellbeing and I’m pleased that you have found some relief in the craft. Good luck on your adventures, chin up and keep going. You’re the best pal you’ve got so look after yourself.

    I just made my first functional bow with this method! I had one failure but the second attempt was able to launch an arrow! It’s not very accurate and I haven’t really tillered it, but the feeling of seeing that arrow fly out from a bow I made myself was otherworldly! Thanks for making this video, I can’t wait to learn more about all this!

    I’m back. (i wrote a comment four years ago.) I built your shave horse because I liked its organic build, no hardware, and efficient simplicity. If I would appreciate anyone doing a video on leg angles, i would appreciate one from you. My shave-horse replica leg angles were a complete crapshoot. I understand splay and rake. I somewhat grasp sightline by the many explanations on UA-cam, but I’d appreciate less explanation and someone showing me sightline on a chair. (No more, “Turn the chair until one of the legs looks perpendicular. Then pretend your eye is a laser running through the leg under the seat. That is your sightline.” Whaaa??? Okay. So what?) Resultant angle??? WTH? I don’t want to see math formulas, I want to see each of these concepts applied right to a chair and its legs. Like a good novel, show me, don’t tell me. Your shave horse video us so practical, no fuss. You’d be the guy.

    Any North American tribe would almost always have just two things to use in making their bows; a knife and a tomahawk. And that was all that was needed as many a young man was taught from his father/ grandfather.In today’s world, I think we make everything much more complicated than we have to.

    Has anybody tried this with wood doweling from home depot? I wonder if it would be strong enough or if it has to be specific doweling for arrows.

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock 2 місяці тому

      Beware of dowelling unless you very carefully select each piece. The risk is of the shaft splitting - especially with high poundage bows. A split shaft driving itself into your hand is not something you want. So go carefully.

    That was a really enjoyable video, Mick. Thank you. I have several walking sticks and have practised stick fighting for years, originally as physio for old forearm injuries but I now enjoy it as an art form in itself. When I walk my dog in the woods, I always have a stick with me just in case but I've yet to need it in anger. A knob kerrie is a formidable weapon in the right hands, but its use seems to be a bit of a lost art nowadays.
